Why ARRI ALEXA?

Capture

The new ARRI camera sets the standard in the professional league of digital cameras which includes the Sony F900R, Sony F35, Sony F23, Panavision Genesis, the previous ARRI D-21 and the RED cameras, RED ONE, and the soon-to-be released RED EPIC camera.

Until recent years 35mm film was a step above digital alternatives in terms of resolution, colour, latitude and sensitivity. ARRI ALEXA builds on the expertise gained from developing the industry leading ARRI D 21. The ALEXA digital cinema camera has also improved on other professional camera systems that have helped to provide a viable alternative to 35mm film such as the Sony F35, Panavision Genesis and RED ONE.

At the heart of the ARRI ALEXA camera system is ARRI's own 3.5K Super 35mm format ALEV-III CMOS Bayer sensor. Through extended research and experimentation with sensor and pixel technologies ARRI made some important discoveries and applied these to the production of the ALEXA. With Digital motion picture sensors optimum image quality is achieved through a fine balance between detail, colour reproduction and sensitivity. While some competitors strive to improve camera statistics on paper by cramming more and more pixels into a 35mm frame, ARRI employed a "proof is in the pudding" approach with the ALEXA digital camera maintaining that optimum image quality is achieved through slightly fewer, yet larger and more sensitive, pixels filling the available space on a 35mm sensor.

ALEXA's revolutionary 3.5K sensor provides ALEXA with organic skin tones, sensitivity and tonal subtleties superior to any of its competitors. ARRI ALEXA boasts an unrivalled base sensitivity of 800 EI with spectacularly wide exposure latitude of over 13.5 stops! This all adds up to superior images with greater flexibility and efficiency on set. Bright windows will need less attention to maintain their textural detail, and shooting at night is possible with fewer lights or in available light. The unique design of ARRI's custom-built ALEV-III sensor ensures ALEXA's wide exposure latitude across the whole range from 200 EI all the way up to 1600 EI.

Post Production

Unlike other digital 35mm camera systems, which are associated with lengthy, complicated, and therefore costly, post-production workflows, ARRI's ALEXA has been engineered to integrate seamlessly into post production environments. The ALEXA's Direct to Edit (DTE) features make full quality images instantly available for editing, even on set.

The ARRI ALEXA 35mm digital camera allows onboard (DTE) recording to SxS flash cards in full 1080p quality with Apple's native ProRes 444 or ProRes422 (HQ) QuickTime format. The footage requires no ingesting or transcoding and can be instantly edited in Final Cut Pro or Avid Media Composer 5 and onwards. Other recording options include:
